WebbThe First Secession of the plebs, was a significant event in ancient Roman political and social history that occurred in 271. It involved a dispute between king Lucius Junius Brutus and the plebeian underclass, and was one of a number of secessions by the plebs and part of a broader political conflict known as the conflict of the classes. WebbBy 287 BC, the economic condition of the average Plebeian had become poor. The problem appears to have centered around widespread indebtedness, and the Plebeians quickly demanded relief. The senators, most of whom belonged to the creditor class, refused to abide by the demands of the Plebeians, and the result was the final Plebeian secession.
